A.C.E embarks on a soul-stirring adventure with My Girl: “My Choice”

The K-pop group spoke with Panorama.it about their comeback after 2 and a half years since completing their military enlistment

Since bursting onto the scene in 2017, A.C.E has been playing a key role in the ever-evolving world of K-pop. With their infectious energy and heartfelt performances, the group has forged a deep connection with fans worldwide. After a hiatus to fulfill their military service obligations, A.C.E returns triumphantly with their sixth mini-album, My Girl: “My Choice”, offering a profound exploration of identity and purpose.

Formed under Beat Interactive, A.C.E comprises Lee Donghun, Park Junhee, WOW, Kim Byeongkwan, and Kang Yuchan. Their name, Adventure Calling Emotions, reflects the group's mission to ignite a sense of adventure and emotion through their music.

The anticipation surrounding the release of My Girl: “My Choice” was palpable, with fans eagerly awaiting A.C.E’s return. On February 22nd, 2024, that anticipation reached a fever pitch as A.C.E unveiled their latest project in the bustling streets of New York City. It was a momentous occasion, marking their first mini-album release in over two years and signaling a new chapter in their artistic journey.

At the heart of the album lies the title track, "My Girl," a soulful disco-pop anthem that speaks to the soul. Co-written by Lee Donghun and British singer-songwriter Etham, the song delves into themes of self-discovery and the search for meaning in a chaotic world. As we listened to the track for the first time, we were struck by its raw emotion and powerful message. It's a song that resonates deeply, inviting listeners to reflect on their own journey of self-discovery.

But it's not just the title track that shines on My Girl: “My Choice”. Each song on the album offers a unique perspective and adds depth to the overall narrative. From the upbeat energy of "Effortless" to the heartfelt sincerity of "Facetime," A.C.E showcases their versatility and growth as artists. As long-time fans of the group will notice, it's incredible to witness A.C.E evolution over the years.

Of course, no discussion of My Girl: “My Choice” would be complete without acknowledging the absence of member Kang Yuchan, who was unable to participate due to military enlistment commitments. While his presence is missed, the rest of the group more than rises to the occasion, delivering performances that are both powerful and poignant.

As we listen to My Girl: “My Choice” on repeat, we can't help but feel a sense of pride in how far A.C.E has come. It's not just about the music; it's about the group's journey and the impact they had on their fans while continuing to push the boundaries of K-pop.

Panorama.it spoke with them.

Nice to meet you boys, and welcome back. Can you please introduce yourselves to our readers?

Park Junhee: Hello, we are a five-member boy group from Korea, and we are A.C.E! Our members consist of leader Park Junhee, main vocal Lee Donghun, main dancer WOW, main performer Kim Byeongkwan, and main vocal Kang Yuchan, and we are active with these five members. Nice to meet you all!

Let’s start from your music. This is the first comeback in two and a half years. What emotions do you experienced while preparing for this comeback?

Lee Donghun: All of us did it with the mindset of resetting. With our experiences and a more mature mindset than before, we prepared it with the heart of conveying “A.C.E is forever” to our fandom, CHOICE.

Can you tell us more about the album. Starting from the title “My Girl: My Choice”?

Kim Byeongkwan: I think our new mini album, My Girl: My Choice, is both A.C.E’s journey to find their loved ones and a journey to find our own ego. Along with the title track, "My Girl," the songs in the album contain the emotions and stories of these journeys. The album contains great songs, so please show it a lot of love!

And what about the title track, My Girl? What kind of song is it for you?

Park Junhee: The title song, “My Girl”, is a song about the journey of finding my way out of the suppressing daily life and the emotions that come along that journey. It's a disco-pop genre with a lovely and refreshing melody, and it's a song that announces our comeback to our fans after a long time. We have so much affection for this song, and we hope that many people will be happy while listening to the song.

WOW: In terms of music, A.C.E. used to showcase more powerful music. However, this song provides a more mature feeling and relaxation musically.

If you could ask yourselves one question about this new album, what would it be?

Park Junhee: Are you really on the way you want? (Answer: Of course ^^)

Kim Byeongkwan: Did you find your ego and lover? (Answer: Choice)

Lee Donghun: Were you happy with this album?

WOW: Has your attitude toward life become a little more relaxed and comfortable, just like the vibe of this album?

The poster for your comeback seems parodying a classic office rom-com, do you watch dramas and if so, which one are you suggesting your fans to watch?

Park Junhee: I recommend the Korean drama <Misaeng>. It's a genre similar to our office concept and it's a very well-made drama where you can feel various emotions.

WOW: I recently watched <Twenty-Five Twenty-One>, and I recommend it.

How do you think A.C.E members have grown and evolved during this hiatus?

Kim Byeongkwan: Personally, my consideration for others has deepened, and while I've been away from the music industry, I met so many people, leading me to appreciate how good people our members are once again.

WOW: As we have time to reflect on ourselves, we're all relaxed in our attitudes and thoughts, and I feel like we're truly enjoying our work.

How has A.C.E's connection with fans influenced your creative process leading up to your comeback?

Lee Donghun: There was a part with the fans in this music video, and I was thankful that there were fans who stayed by our side for a long time. It was an opportunity to feel passionate and determined once again.

You have a strong bond with your fans, you featured them as backup dancers and actors in the title track. How did you have this idea and how did you work on that?

WOW: Through our meeting, we started with the idea that we wanted to make this album with our fans and thought about what we could do realistically. We made a section where we could collaborate with our fans and successfully filmed the music video together. The process is so unforgettable, and I think it will be one of the most memorable things.

What we should expect from A.C.E from now on?

Park Junhee: We will continue to grow and try to improve so please keep your eyes on us. I hope that we can be a source of motivation for you, too.

I have one last question: who are A.C.E now?

Lee Donghun: Just like the lyrics of “Cactus”, we’re a group that doesn’t get discouraged easily.
