A dirty lake, river or even a clogged sewer is an eye soar. Walking past one and our reactions to that is a true test of character. A very minimal three percent is all that we have as fresh water and moreover, we clearly understand that there is no life without water. In spite of such pressing compulsions if we decide to abuse our left over fresh water bodies then it reflects on our character in every way.
Social conscience or civic sense should come from within, education and sensitization definitely plays a large role in making society conscious and responsible towards environment. Having said that, are literate and educated people acting responsibly. Blaming damage to environment conveniently on the industries, government and the economically downtrodden is a routine. Taking it to another level is the debate of developing or developed countries and whose responsibility it is to bite the bullet first and bring environmental reforms.
Convenience over conservation syndrome has taken over and is becoming an epidemic, the price that we are paying in return for our crime towards environment is huge. Just that it goes unnoticed and is not being accounted for. “Tree gives fresh air, lakes give fresh water and bees are pollinating agents” these have become generic cliché lines which have no audience any more. Air conditioned indoors, treated water at the end of a tap and comforts at the press of a button have made us dependent and blind to reality. The money spent on healthcare across societies has increased multifold, primarily because of our unnatural means of living. The price we pay for healthcare is not being attributed as reciprocation or a charge towards environmental damage caused by every single one of us.
We do not have to be told that we need to act, isn’t it time that we realize for our own self that we need to live responsibly if we wish to continue living on the face of this planet. What are we talking about we being Human Beings, where is the Human in every being if we cannot care for other life forms with whom we share this planet. Also, we have been given an opportunity to enjoy and relish nature’s resources for our survival, instead we are exploiting and triggering nature to painfully remove us from the scene. Every reader knows that he/she is at fault, its not just the politcians, industrialists and people at war who are killing animals, polluting and exploiting mother nature, including me we all are doing it. It’s a collective crime, its time for a collective makeover, dramatic reversal is not possible and sustainable. However, multiple dramatic reversals worldover is needed now because the rate at which things are unfolding doubts are if there will another ten minutes in life to sit and write or read about environment.
