“A man who has not been in Italy, is always conscious of an inferiority”. This is what the English poet Samuel Johnson wrote in the 18th Century while travelling through Italy. A few centuries later, another British singer, Elton John, stated “I love places that have an incredible history. I love the Italian way of life. I love the food. I love the people. I love the attitudes of Italians”. We could continue with a never-ending list of intriguing and flattering quotations about Italy. However, for those interested in visiting the country now to prove both Johnson and John’s words, today’s opening of Expo Milan 2015 is offering even more exciting reasons to have a taste of Italy.
From today to 31 October 2015, Milan will host the 2015 Universal Exposition under the theme Feeding the Planet, Energy for Life. This extraordinary Italian-based global laboratory will offer visitors the chance to take a veritable journey around the world, through the cultures, histories and innovations of over 140 participating countries. The Exposition site is made of over 60 pavilions and thematic areas dedicated to the cultural and culinary traditions of the entire world, and more generally to economic, scientific and social issues related to food production and consumption.
Not many people are aware that Expo 2015 will not stop in Milan. A serious of initiatives have been launched to link the Universal Exhibition to all Italian regions, with the aim of extending this extraordinary experience to all the tourist who will visit Italy during the next few months.
Considering that Italy has the richest cultural heritage in the world, it is easy to find some further reasons to enjoy the country for a few more days. Italy has 50 UNESCO listed world heritage sites; 24 national parks and 3274 gardens; 3430 museums; 2009 monuments and archaeological sites; 83700 live performances; 41200 musical shows; 176 food delicacies that are officially protected and 328 wines. You won’t experience all this variety staying in Milan only, and this is the reason why the Italian Expo is more than an Exposition, a once in a life experience.
