SEREDNJE, UKRAINE – MARCH 27: Two young Ukrainian girls (cannot be named) sit in one of the rooms of the already existing St. Elizabeth’s Children’s Home, a detached workplace of the Slovak St. Elizabeth’s University of Health and Social Work, on March 27, 2023 in Serednje, Ukraine. The children’s home, which was originally a bakery, currently provides shelter to 17 children and 8 social workers, who mostly come from the war-torn city of Mariupol. Since the beginning of the Russian aggression in Ukraine, the Slovak, Czech and Ukrainian governments started a project through The Slovak Agency for International Development Coordination (SlovakAid) to help fund the expansion of the children’s homes with the building of 12 wooden houses that will provide temporary shelter for at least 48 Ukrainian children. The wooden houses are built by Ukrainian workers, the houses themselves were bought with the help of a Czech charity, the building of the local infrastructure, wastewater management facilities and the interior of the houses are funded by the Slovak government with an amount of 205 000 euros.
