Italy must stop thinking reforms have to be done because Brussels or Berlin or other capitals ask us. We’ll do them because they’re right for us

During a book presentation right after his meeting with the German Chancellor Angela Merkel, the Italian Premier Matteo Renzi clarified his position about Europe and reforms.

According to him, Italy has to “get out from the subjection in Europe,”, with the aim of stopping its “provincial attitude.” In particular, Renzi stressed that “Italy must stop thinking reforms have to be done because Brussels or Berlin or other capitals ask us. We’ll do them because they’re right for us.” The Italian Premier believes there is a “spread” European citizens’ expectations and their relationship with institutions in Bruxelles. Accordingly, he recommended the EU to strengthen its own commitment on growth and job creation rather than keep on focusing on austerity.

Finally, he reminded his audience that “Italy needs to show our (international) partners that we are getting serious about reforms, that we’ll pass them in a set period of time, without letting the parliamentary term elapse, that that we have the courage to question taboos that have not been touched for 30 years.” Everybody in Italy is looking forward to see if Renzi will be able to keep his word.
