How Italy promotes tourism by recovering its old sites
The project Valore Paese - Cammini e Percorsi is relaunching sustainable tourism
The Italian State Property Administration has recently started looking at roadman's houses, inns, hostels, manor farms but also at old abandoned building (such as monasteries, towers and castles) in order to recover and re-use them as touristic venues.
There are over one hundred public properties ready to be used as service stations, hotels or bicycle repair shops along "slow paths" to be rigorously travelled by bike or on foot.
This initiative is part of the project Valore Paese - Cammini e Percorsi presented by the State Property Administration Agency in partnership with the Italian Ministry of Cultural Heritage and Activities and Tourism and with the Italian Ministry of Infrastructure and Transport.
Recovery interventions usually concerns abandoned structures along traditional historical-religious itineraries or along cycling and walking tracks, going from North to South throughout Italy.
The brilliant initiative includes the participation of private actors, such as companies, coops or associations mostly made up by young people (under 40) who will have the task to suggest how to modernize the old structures taken into consideration.
The sites on which the modernization process will take place are located along outstanding scenarios. Some instances are the old manor farm in Matera (Basilicata), located in the via Appia Montescaglioso Grancia; the old rail toll booth in Norcia (Umbria), on St. Benedict's Way; the former barracks in Ca Olmo di Boara (Emilia Romagna) and another old rail toll booth in Grumo Appula (Puglia), located on the cycle path "water". Other spectacular places are located in Modena (cycle path "Sun"), Matera (Basilicata) in the former manor farm along via Appia Irsina, as well as along St. Francis' Way.
By summer 2017, the Italian state property administration will issue a call to give in a free concession 100 properties a year. Furthermore, the Italian Ministry of Cultural Heritage and Activities and Tourism will allocate 3 million Euros to support start-ups undertaking the process of recovery in the first 2 years of their activity.
