BIGONE is the name
Exclusive interview with one of the most prominent voices of the Korean hip hop industry
When you think about BIGONE, the first thought goes to his music: each song composed by this one-of-a-kind songwriter is made of pure love. Love and talent are two of the main player in BIGONE’s music journey. Member of the hip-hop dance crew MBA and a former member of the boy group 24K under the stage name Daeil, BIGONE is now a well-known musician in the K-hip-hop industry. His last studio album is called bigoneisthename and features artists like GOT7’s JAY B, Mirani, and JAEHA.
Panorama had an exclusive talk with him.
Nice to meet you, and thank you for being here with Panorama. Can you please introduce yourself to the Italian public?
Ciao! I’m BIGONE!
Your name is Kim Daeli; how did you choose to go by BIGONE?
My Korean name is ‘BIG’ and ‘ONE in traditional Hanja characters, so that’s why my name is BIGONE.
You are not the usual Korean artist. You are definitely not a K-pop singer, nor a K-R&B or Hip Hop. Your music blends a lot of different shades. How would you define yourself as an artist?
I wouldn’t want to put myself into one category, but I would be a pop-punk musician!
Your last album is called BIGONEISTHENAME. Ten tracks, ten gems. With some high level featuring. What was the process behind creating it?
I had so much fun working on this album. After a variety of experimenting, I was able to find my own sound and make these songs into an album. It was an honor to be able to work with the amazing artists that featured on my album, and I’m very happy that my listeners also felt that way.
Why did you choose to open with a song called Happy Birthday?
I decided to have ‘Happy Birthday’ as the first song on my album because the lyrics of this song wish for us to return to and be born again when we were the happiest. This album embodies my happiest and most cherished moments of my life.
I’m also curious about Password 486. Is there a particular meaning in the number?
‘486’ is the number of strokes in each Korean letter of ‘I love you’ in Korean. ‘486’ is what Korean people back in the day used to send on their pagers to loved ones.
You worked with a lot of artists. Can we name a few? Like... Mirani: how was working with her?
Mirani is an old friend of mine! I needed a stellar female artist, and she gifted me the best verse for me on the song ‘Still the Same’.
Then we have JAY B: it’s a long-going collaboration with him. You both are really polyhedric, how’s the process of creating a song together?
JAY B is also an old friend of mine. We met while dancing when we were young and always talked of working on a song together. I was so happy to make this come true to fruition on the song ‘Windy Day’.
If you could choose another collaboration, a dream one. Who would you like to work with?
I would love to collaborate and work with more pop-punk artists!
When you started making music, who or what influenced you the most? And do you still have some role models in the industry?
I grew up listening to and was influenced by Yu Jae-ha, Seotaiji, and G-Dragon. I don’t have any role models currently!
If you could send only a message forever to your listeners through your music, which would it be?
LOVE IS LIKE PUNK, NOT DEAD
And what should we expect next?
I will be back with more songs filled with joy. Please enjoy my first studio album, ‘BIGONEISTHENAME’, in the meanwhile! Thank you so much!
Who is BIGONE now?
