The member of on the most recognized groups of the second generation of K-pop talks with Panorama.it about her new album, how to embrace our true self and rise above negativity

Apink's Kim Namjoo has returned to the spotlight with her long-awaited solo album "BAD". The album, which features three compelling tracks, showcases Namjoo's evolution as an artist and her unwavering commitment to her art.

The album's focus is the title track, "Bad," a dynamic anthem that encourages listeners to rise above negativity and embrace their true selves. But before diving into the titular song, listeners are treated to the introspective track "Mirror Mirror," narrated by acclaimed actor Daniel Henney, setting the tone for the album's empowering message. Additionally, "Ridin' Out" serves as a powerful declaration of self-assurance and resilience, rounding out the album with its uplifting energy.

What sets 'BAD' apart is Namjoo's deep involvement in its creation. She not only shaped its concept and theme but also refined its visual elements, playing a pivotal role in every aspect of the album's production. While she didn't contribute to the lyrics this time around, her influence is palpable throughout the album, reflecting her growth as an artist and her unwavering dedication to her craft. This level of personal investment in the album is a testament to Namjoo's artistic vision and commitment, making 'BAD' a truly unique and special project.

For Namjoo, "BAD" isn't just another solo project—it's a statement of artistic independence and self-expression, a new way to showcase a fresh and distinctive image as a solo artist, separate from her identity within Apink.

Debuting with Apink in 2011, Namjoo ventured into solo activities in 2020 with the release of "Bird," where she showcased a solid and confident persona. However, "BAD" marks a new chapter in her solo career, one characterized by growth, resilience, and unapologetic authenticity. Namjoo credits her personal and group experiences over the past four years for shaping her into the artist she is today, highlighting the evolution of "human Kim Namjoo" reflected in her music.

Panorama.it spoke with her.

Nice to meet you again. How have you been?

I've been shooting and editing my own YouTube videos and preparing for a solo album!

Let's start by talking about your new music. What kind of album BAD is?

This album portrays the story of not being swayed by negative reactions from others and showing more of oneself.

How does it differ from your first solo work, Bird?

While the previous album showed boldness, this album portrays a more daring and further evolved artistic side, as if spreading one's wings wide open.

Can you explain what deeper meanings are contained in the album title "BAD"?

It conveys a candid and unreserved message of "Don't be swayed by bad words. This is me, and I like this aspect of myself."

How would you compare the themes of self-love in "Mirror, Mirror" and empowerment in "Ridin'Out"?

Both "Mirror, Mirror" and "Ridin'Out" contain themes of positive self-love. "Mirror, Mirror" expresses a confident self-love that believes one is the coolest no matter what others say, while "Ridin'Out" is a comforting message wishing for self-love and empowerment, saying, "Someday, the dazzling season will come, so confidently walk your path as it is."

"Mirror Mirror" is narrated by the world-renowned actor Daniel Henney. How did you get this idea?

Daniel Henney's narration in "Mirror Mirror" was an idea that came up during album discussions. When his name was suggested, we contacted him through company channels, and he graciously agreed right away.

"Don't be swayed by bad words. This is me. I like the way I am." What does this sentence reveal about Kim Namjoo's mindset?

This sentence reveals my determination to express myself freely and confidently without being affected by others' opinions and my continuous efforts to develop myself further in that direction.

"Bad" is a work that can be connected to awful feelings. How does Kim Namjoo advise against reacting to negative words and how do you approach to criticism?

My advice is not to be swayed by negative words, believing that they do not benefit oneself. While I value advice from those who love me, I also understands the danger of losing myself by being too influenced by others' opinions, and thus emphasizes the importance of self-love and self-trust.

How does your outspokenness contribute to your narrative in this album?

My outspokenness contributes to the honesty and sincerity of the stories told in this album. The lyrics almost feel like conversations I have with my friends, containing messages I want to convey to myself as well.

What was the reaction from the other Apink's members to your new album?

The other Apink members showed continuous support, saying they found the performances impressive and even came to support at the showcase and music shows. Their support was touching and gave me strength.

If you had to describe yourself in one word, which would it be?

Diva (Trying to become one)

Who is Kim Namjoo now?

I am someone who constantly strives to be honest.
