In concomitanza con la festa di Halloween (notte del 31 ottobre), la cittadina di Whitby, nell'omonima città del North Yorkshire, nel nord-est inglese, ospita ogni anno il festival gotico Whitby Goth Weekend. 

In occasione dell'evento, per quattro notti le rovine della storica abbazia di Whitby sono illuminate dalle drammatiche luci che vediamo in questi scatti di Ian Forsyth per Getty Images.

Il monastero benedettino, edificato intorno al 660 d.C. su un promontorio affacciato sul Mare del Nord, sarà definitivamente distrutto nel 1540 per mano di Enrico VIII, ma è rimasto per secoli un punto di riferimento per i naviganti. Fonte di ispirazione per il celebre Dracula (1897) di Bram Stoker, l'abbazia di Whitby è espressamente citata nel capitolo VI del romanzo. Le sue rovine sono oggi custodite dall'English Heritage.
