According to Guinness World Records, the oldest hotel in the world is the Nisiyama Onsen Keiunkan in Yamanashi, Japan, a hot-spring place, which has been operating since 705 AD. The second oldest is also a Japanese place: Houshi Ryokan, in Komatsu, opened in 718 and managed by the same family for 46 generations so far.

Italian hotels are also well represented in this interesting ranking. The first one is Albergo Cavalletto and Doge Orseolo, founded in Venice in 1308 (4^th position), followed by Villa d'Este on the Como Lake, founded in 1568 (5^th position), and Hotel Dogana Vecchia in Turin, opened at the beginning of the Eighteenth Century (6^th).
