Degas - Cassatt alla National Gallery of Art di Washington

Dal momento in cui l'americana Mary Cassatt (1844-1926) fece il suo debutto nel 1879 con il gruppo di artisti conosciuti come gli "Impressionisti", il suo nome è stato collegato con quello del francese Edgar Degas (1834-1917).

L'affinità tra i due artisti è innegabile. Entrambi realisti, traevano la loro ispirazione dalla figura umana ed evitavano quasi del tutto i paesaggi. Entrambi colti, intelligenti e arguti, erano coetanei e si muovevano negli stessi circoli sociali e intellettuali. Cassatt, che si era stabilita a Parigi nel 1874, conobbe Degas nel 1877, quando lui la invitò a partecipare con gli impressionisti ad una loro mostra. Nel decennio successivo, i due artisti furono impegnati in un dialogo intenso, fatto di consigli, sfide, collaborazioni e sperimentazioni. Mary ed Edgar rimasero amici devoti per quarant'anni, fino alla morte di Degas. La mostra in corso alla National Gallery of art di Washington (sino al 5 ottobre 2014) si divide in quattro sale tematiche, nelle quali si dispongono circa settanta dipinti (ma anche pastelli e incisioni) che conferiscono al dialogo tra i due artisti una prospettiva inedita: una sequenza raffinata e dinamica fatta da un percorso alterno di similitudini e differenze.
