Tips for Home Studying from Italy: 27. Ban on Screens

Daily pills to help students (and families) organize their study in Covid-19 times, when almost one billion children have seen their schools close. Signed by Marcello Bramati and Lorenzo Sanna, deans and teachers at Faes High schools in Milan. As reported by Time magazine, they are teaching online during the lockdown, in an ongoing experiment in remote learning. Every morning at 8.30 a.m., their advice, tips and good practices for students of all ages.

With Easter holidays, school has stopped. Under normal circumstances, a real holiday. School from Christmas to Easter is always challenging, so Easter vacations always come as a welcome break.

Nowadays everything is different and the students' days all of sudden become empty. A situation to manage, both for the kids and for their families. Without commitments from morning to evening, what should our children do? For sure it is necessary to detoxify from the screens, encouraging different activities.

Of course it is the moment to watch the popular tv series or a movie in the evening: a different use of technology from the hours spent on the computer listening to lessons, studying and writing.

It may seem trivial, ancient, outdated, but it is more important than in other historical moments to find different activities. Isolation will continue, so for these few days it would be really healthy to avoid computers, or at least to limit their use.

An activity that needs time and care, like playing an instrument, at any level, or playing chess or making a debut in the kitchen, cooking for Easter Day. The idea is to try something practical, usual, long forgotten or unpublished. It's also time to turn on the music and revamp the kids' room, why not. Dust off the past, select what to highlight and what to box up or donate.

On top of that, it's worth reading, better on paper. How many unread books do you have at home? Let's read to understand, out of curiosity, to look at the paper and not at a screen, for the pleasure of doing so, without final evaluation.

We have about ten days off from school, but to spend at home anyway. Let's try to plan long activities to fill this time, without killing it passively between one social media and another.
