Italy's role in the global pear business

FuturPera is one of the main international trade fairs in the agricultural business, as it  is the first event of its kind entirely dedicated to the promotion of the pear supply chain.

Sustainable growing techniques, storage systems, marketing and retail chains will all be displayed in Ferrara from 16th to 18th November 2017. In this second edition, the fair aims to promote a continuous growth of the pear business, as well as its technological innovation. Last year, over eight thousand people visited the exhibition area or participated in one of the fifty conventions, gatherings and technical meetings that were organized.

Italian pears will be once again at the center of the stage, because the Abate variety dominates the European pear market, together with Rocha from Portugal and Conference from the Netherlands. Other Italian varieties that are obtaining a good success on the international market are Falstaff, Max Red Bartlett, and Carmen. According to Albano Bermani, vice-president of Organizzazione Interprofessionale Pera, the aim of Italian producers "is for our Abate pears to be known all over the world and to undermine the Conference leadership in countries like India and China. It is a rather ambitious objective, but we can do it as Abate pears have the right characteristics to become one of the main varieties on the international market."

A number of side events will also be put in place, thanks to the signature of an agreement signed with the main Ferrara associations representing commercial and restaurant businesses. The side events will focus on food and food education in cooperation with regional producers, in order to enhance the role of the city of Ferrara as the "Italian Pear Capital", at the centre pof the most important pear producing region in Europe, covering an area in the Po Valley, between Modena and Rovigo.
