Parlando con accanto il presidente vietnamita Tran Dai Quang, Obama ha affermato, come riferisce la Cnn, che la revoca dell'embargo fa parte di una maggiore cooperazione con il Vietnam nel campo della difesa, contraddicendo così le affermazioni secondo cui avrebbe lo scopo di contrastare la crescente influenza cinese nella regione.

Al contrario, ha detto Obama, la decisione rientra nel desiderio di normalizzare le relazioni tra Stati Uniti e Vietnam e cancellare un divieto "basato su una divisione ideologica tra i nostri due Paesi".

La visita di Obama ad Hanoi - la terza di un presidente Usa dalla fine della guerra nel 1975 dopo quelle di Bill Clinton e di George W. Bush - e la revoca dell'embargo coronano un cammino ventennale di riavvicinamento tra Stati Uniti e Vietnam da molti ritenuto impensabile. (ANSA)
