The cork oak characterizes the most of the landscape of Sardinia. The first use of cork could be dated back to about 3000 years ago, and since then cork has remained an important element for local economy.

One of the curiosities which should not be missed in a trip to Sardinia is the tradition of cork craftwork. In the past, cork was such an important product that it was even used by the local people to make roof tiles. Today, it is used mainly for trinkets and household objects (such as vases and services of tableware lined with cork), as well as for millions of wine corks in various shapes and sizes.

The "capitals" of cork production are Calangianus and Tempio Pausania, in the north of the island.
