A vent'anni dalla morte di Kurt Cobain (l'anniversario cade il 5 aprile) compare in Internet una lista compilata a mano dal leader dei Nirvana (vedi sotto). Più che altro una classifica con i 50 album che con tutta probabilità hanno influenzato lo stile e la scrittura dei trio di Seattle. Una Top 50 molto interessante perché rivela le radici sonore dell'ultima grande rock band dello scorso Millennio.
Non sorprende che per Cobain il disco più influente di sempre sia Raw Power, album cult degli Stooges con Iggy Pop. Gli Stooges erano selvaggi, sgraziati, adrenalinici, proprio come i Nirvana.
Il filo che li lega l'uno all'altro è proprio quell'attitudine punk, quasi sovversiva: Cobain e soci però avevano dalla loro parte una straordinaria abilità nello scrivere melodie pop, ritornelli memorabili inglobati in un sound devastante: A riprova di questa inclinazione "commercial" Cobain cita tra i dischi di riferimento Rocks degli Aerosmith e Get The Knack, dei Knack la band dell'hit My Sharona. Naturalmente non manca David Bowie, presente in classifica con The man who sold the world, l'album da cui è tratto il brano omonimo splendidamente risuonato dai Nirvana nel live unplugged.
