San Leo is an ancient hamlet is located on an enormous rocky outcropping which cannot be scaled from any side, just behind the Republic of San Marino and the Rimini Riviera, in the Marecchia Valley. Its extraordinary postion has led to its military and religious importance since its ancient origins, as it was seen as a precious and unique resource against incursions. Indeed, the majestic defensive fortress can only be reached by a single road carved out of the mountain, like in prehistoric times.
Mentioned by Dante Alighieri in the Divine Comedy, San Leo is a popular tourist destination that is charming in every season.
