Matera (Basilicata) has been selected by the famous travel guide Lonely Planet as one of the top 10 cities to visit in 2018.
The city, selected as European Capital of Culture for 2019, presents a stunning backdrop of stairways and narrow lanes, cave-houses carved out of rock, stone churches with beautiful frescoes and elegant buildings. Taking a walk in Matera is kind of a magic experience. As the Lonely Planet says, "snaking beneath the surface is a labyrinth of cave dwellings, churches and monasteries that date back over 9000 years - making it one of the oldest living cities in the world". And with all the events it added to its cultural calendar in 2018 and 2019, visiting the city now could make the experience even more special.
