Friuli-Venezia Giulia is a region in Italy's north-eastern side, on the border with Slovenia. It counts many arts cities, offers some nice beaches for families and has a long tradition of wine production.
Trieste is the main city of this region. When walking around in the centre, you can't miss Piazza Unità d'Italia, the largest European square facing the sea. It is in fact surrounded by palaces all around and opens up on the sea, summarizing the fascinating charm of the city as a whole. Trieste is also rich in cafés that once used to be literary cafés, where writers and philosophers like Italo Svevo, James Joice and Umberto Saba used to meet and discuss their ideas. The most famous one is Caffè degli Specchi (Café of Mirrors), vibrant point of gathering in the nineteenth and twentieth century.
Miramare castle is near Trieste and dominates the sea from its position on the coastline. Its interiors were designed to resemble those of a boat therefore it is mainly made of wooden floors and walls. In Friuli-Venezia Giulia there are many other castles and fortresses like those in the cities of Villafredda, in Villalta, Muggia and Gorizia. Also wince cellars have a very long tradition in this region. Today, some turned into relaxing bed and breakfast, where you can have an holistic experience of wine tasting and typical local food in Friuli's country side.
Along the whole coast facing the Adriatic Sea, there are many seaside locations perfect for family holidays. Places like Grado and Lignano Sabbiadoro have all sorts of facilities for children. You can choose between equipped or non-equipped beaches depending on your preferences. In Lignano there is also a new beach tailor-made for dogs. Grado is appreciated for its clean water and innovativeness thanks to Wi-Fi areas and other facilities.
