31 Italian researchers win ERC Starting Grants

The funding will enable these early-career researchers to set up their own research teams and pursue ground-breaking ideas

The European Research Council (ERC) has just announced the winners of its "Starting Grants". The funding, worth in total ?429 million, will enable 291 early-career researchers to set up their own research teams and pursue ground-breaking ideas. The grants are awarded under the 'excellent science' pillar of Horizon 2020, the EU's research and innovation programme.

The new grantees will work on a wide range of topics, such as exploring Earth's past climates, investigating neglected tropical diseases, and studying how diplomacy transforms under the pressure of new media. The funded research covers all disciplines: physical sciences and engineering, life sciences, and social science and humanities.

Among the winners there are 31 Italians. 13 of them will continue their research abroad (in Switzerland, France and the UK), while the other 18 will be based in the following Italian universities: Università La Sapienza di Roma, Fondazione Istituto Italiano di tecnologia (Genova), Istituto Einaudi per l'Economia e la Finanza (Roma), Istituto Europeo di Firenze, Istituto nazionale di astrofisica (Roma), Politecnico di Milano, SISSA (Trieste), SSA Sant'Anna (Pisa), Università di Verona, Università Campus biomedico Roma, Università Bocconi, Università Federico II (Napoli), Università di Padova, Università di Roma, and Università di Trento.
