Water being the basis of life is often abused and exploited as a resource merely because of its easy availability at the end of an open tap. Little or no thought is ever being put into subjects like, the source of water, sustainable availability and how one should conserve water. India as a country is blessed with rivers cutting across the length and breadth of the nation. Adding to this are the plethora of lakes and ponds which act as vital water source. People realize that there is no life without water but what they fail to understand is the impact on water and water bodies due to our lifestyle.

The attitude that all that nature has to offer is for human consumption is cause of concern. Just because we can talk loud and walk straight, it gives us no authority to utilize and waste natural resources. This is what is happening to urban Indian water bodies such as lakes, ponds and streams. People are unaware about the grave consequences that one has to face in the future due to our anti environmental activities today. From direct inflow of drainage to illegal dumping of trash in water bodies has several environmental and health implications. If restored and maintained these water bodies will not just act as a water source but will also play a major role in Temperature regulation, Ground water stability, avoid flooding, increase in resident flora & fauna and ensure hygienic living conditions.

Select citizens are concerned, however they are unaware of where to start. Even if the government is ready to step in and help, the biggest stumbling block is the People’s attitude, change in perception and increased understanding on environmental issues has become the need of the hour. Mass sensitization is vital as it shall bring in the desired change. Restoration efforts are on at select lakes across the country, but only with people’s participation can there be results at the needed level. Our education cannot be merely for the sake of earning but for learning and what we need to learn is that we are not the only one’s on the face of this planet. We share this planet with million other life forms, we need to live in harmony with them all.
